Mad Dog Rig Repair and Replacement
Gulf of Mexico
The Mad Dog field is located in Western Atwater Foldbelt, Gulf of Mexico, approximately 190 miles south of New Orleans. The nominal water depth is approximately 4,500 feet and the field runs along the Sigsbee Escarpment. The field is operated by BP on behalf of BHP Billiton and Unocal. Due to the excessive damage caused by Hurricane Ike, BP decided to remove the existing drill rig support module and replace with a new built unit. CTI project management personnel were integrated into the BP Mad Dog Fabrication and Installation Team to provide engineering support, project and interface management, and installation expertise.

CTI engineering and project management responsibilities for this project included the following for the new-built Drill Support Module (DSM) fabrication and installation:
  • Provide project management and engineering services for the removal and refurbishment of equipment
  • Provide project engineering support during the fabrication of the new DSM
  • Serve as the project interface between the installation contractor and the fabricator of the DSM
  • Review all removal and installation procedures for the DSM
  • Verify contractor compliance with BP's standard operating procedures and work permit requirements
  • Provide offshore technical support during the offshore installation and hook-up and commissioning activities
  • Support and monitor Health, Environment, and Safety (HES) compliance, and manage logistics for personnel and vessels used during the installation campaign
